Medical Maker Space – Tech Strategy at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC

Come out for this talk by James King, Information Architect and Branch Chief at the internal research library for the largest biomedical founder in the world. James will discuss the technology strategy driving the library’s developments in data, collaboration, and virtual learning. He will also discuss two of the library’s current initiatives – Custom Information Solutions, a geek squad team building data-rich websites for disease spaces, and the Technology Hub, a sandbox learning and maker space designed to experiment with 3D printing, data visualization, modeling, GIS, and bioinformatics analysis.  This is event is free to attend in person, and is also being broadcast as a free webinar.

The community service project of the Mosaic 2016 conference will send hundreds of books to children in First Nations communities in Ontario to encourage them to dream of careers in the health professions.  In partnership with Club Amick and the Southern Ontario Library Service approximately 225 titles have been identified to develop special collections that will be sent to up to 5 schools, primarily in Northern Ontario.

Aboriginal Canadians are 4.3% of the Canadian population, but less than 1% are doctors, and the Aboriginal community faces serious health challenges.  This project is based on work conducted by the Universite de Montreal.  Find more information on that project here.

This year we are pleased to welcome Janet Parsons (Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital) and Clara Juando-Prats (Applied Health Research Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital) as our speakers for the evening.  Janet and Clara will share their recent research with their talk “The Colours of Perspective”

The Colours of Perspective

There is increasing interest in leveraging the arts as a way of creating and disseminating knowledge. In health care arts-based qualitative research methods are being used to explore the experiences of patients, families, providers and policy makers. Different artistic genres employed include those from the visual (e.g. painting, drawing, photography, film), literary (e.g. poetry and fiction) and performing arts (e.g. research-based drama, dance, music). Our presentation focuses on two projects which used the visual arts to explore the lived experiences of persons experiencing poverty and marginalization, as well as the people who care for them. The Picturing Foster Care study examined experiences of perinatal child custody loss amongst young parents living in extreme poverty. It used photo voice and storytelling methods to explore this issue from four different perspectives: young mothers, young fathers, child welfare professionals, and health care providers. Sketching Life is a study that grew out of Picturing Foster Care, and uses drawing and collage to explore the health experiences of young mothers and how they care for their children and for themselves in circumstances of poverty and vulnerability. Janet Parsons and Clara Juando-Prats will present the findings from these projects, sharing insights gained by engaging in this kind of participatory research, and highlighting the visual art produced during the course of the studies.
